Reform Comment

It is hard to overstate the potential impact of personalised medicine on health services. In the past, even the best medicines were not equally effective for all patients. However, breakthroughs in medical science now mean that treatments can be targeted to individuals. This can improve the effectiveness of care but it also ensures that health systems secure value for money. As an integrated system and with a strong history of collaborative research, the NHS could become a world leader in personalised medicine. However there remain significant challenges to rolling out adoption of personalised medicine across the NHS. In April 2014 Reform partnered with Vertex Pharmaceuticals to explore how to overcome these barriers and harness the potential of personalised medicine. The seminar was led by Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health.
