Andrew Haldenby, Director of Reform, wrote a thunderer article in The Times arguing that giving the NHS more money now would be the worst possible idea.

He argued that this would undermine the massive reforms the NHS is currently trying to undergo, and would give a signal that the pressure is ‘off’. He argues that “only unequivocal support for change, within existing budgets, will move the service in the direction it needs to go.”

“NHS leaders reported recently that additional funding might provide “short-term fixes to current problems” but no more than that. Only a transformation of services would put the NHS on a “sustainable footing”. Chancellor, please don’t let them down.”
