Researcher Alexander Hitchcock wrote an article in the Huffington Post in response to the release of NHS England’s General Practice Forward View.
In it, he highlights NHS England’s ambitious thinking to meet demand including greater use of technology and support for seven-day services. However, in some areas, “the old-model mindset prevails” seen through the Government’s commitment to employ 5000 more GPs by 2020-1. The importance of a more diverse workforce and scale in GP practices is recognised but little is done to offer concrete change to the existing system.
“Wholesale reform will only be achieved if new care models are built across the country. The General Practice Forward View sets out some key ingredients for the future of primary care. To achieve these, the Government and NHS England will need to develop a more radical blueprint for change.”
