Home Secretary Rt Hon Theresa May MP gave a landmark speech for Reform on fire reform. This was the first time she spoke on the subject since the Home Office took over responsibility for fire services in January.
She outlined key areas for reform in her speech including increased efficiency, workforce reform and increased accountability and transparency. She argued that there needs to be greater collaboration between emergency services, particularly between police and fire services. She highlighted the need for workforce reform, including greater diversity so fire forces better reflect their communities. Finally, greater transparency and accountability within forces is essential. She has called for the creation of an independent inspection system to be implemented.
