Reform convened a policy lecture, in partnership with Cisco, on the question of how far technology and the tech sector can help improve productivity. The Rt Hon Matthew Hancock MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General, and Phil Smith, Chief Executive Officer, UK and Ireland at Cisco, both gave speeches.
Digital technology is seen as one of the pathways to solve the UK’s productivity puzzle. The Government’s Digital Transformation Plan shows its commitment to position the UK as one of the world leaders in the integration of digital technology in public services and the wider economy.
To achieve this, certain challenges need to be overcome. The digital skills gap needs to be addressed to meet ever-growing demand. The development of the right infrastructure to support this is also crucial, where connectivity will be key. By unlocking its potential, technology can drive productivity in the UK economy forward.
