On Tuesday 24 March, Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will give the keynote speech on a policy summit that will explore recent developments in policy and generate new ideas for the new Parliament to come. Graham Cole, Chair of the independent Cole Commission, will speak along with experts in business support, high tech exporting and the opportunities and realities of the Asian economies.
It has been three years since the Prime Minister first announced the target of doubling exports to £1 trillion by 2020. In 2013, Reform’s report “Delivering the export ambition” showed that although the outlook for exports is optimistic, new ambition was needed to reach that target.
Since then, the UK’s export performance has continued to be closely scrutinised. The UK’s exports to the BRICs have risen faster than its competitors, and the Office of Budget Responsibility has predicted rising export growth in the future. The creation of the independent Cole Commission, encouraged by the Opposition, demonstrates cross-Party commitment to the objective of stronger exports.
This conference is kindly sponsored by Barclays. Reform and Barclays will launch their updated exports index on the performance of the UK and selected other countries.
