Making the most of private pension reform

Reform convened a private policy roundtable, led by the Minister of State for Pensions Baroness Altmann, to explore how the Government should take forward the private pension reform agenda.

The discussion focused on two issues. Attendees agreed automatic enrolment has been a huge step forward, but important challenges remain, most notably on contribution levels and the proportion of employers that are still outside the automatic enrolment network. There was also agreement that policymakers need to work harder to engage people in pensions policy. A number of initiatives were considered, including financial apps and gamification, the use of nudge techniques around life events and an industry-led campaign. Without success, many will not enjoy the lifestyle in retirement they had anticipated.

The event was held in partnership with Age UK.
