Labour Party conference: “The win win”: should employers play a greater role in employee healthcare?

Reform convened a private roundtable at the Labour Party conference, led by Lord Hunt of King’s Heath, Shadow Spokesperson for Health, on the theme “The win win”: should employers play a greater role in employee healthcare?

In 2002, the Wanless Report suggested that the NHS could save tens of billions of pounds per year if the UK delivered much stronger health prevention and public health. That positive ambition has arguably not been realised. Dame Carol Black’s work since then has emphasised the importance of workplace health. Given the proportion of citizens in the workforce, and the time they spend at work, new efforts by employers will make a tremendous difference. Arguably there are contradictions in the Government’s policy at present. The Five Year Forward View spoke of financial incentives for employers. Recent increases in insurance premium tax may increase the cost of health products for employers and consumers.
