Reform convened a policy roundtable, under the Chatham House Rule, to explore how reform of pensions tax relief might affect savers. It was led by Helen Goodman MP, member of the Treasury Select Committee, and Julian Knight MP, a former personal finance journalist. Attendees considered the benefits of moving towards a flat rate, highlighting the potential for simplicity to boost pension savings, save money for the Exchequer and redistribute assistance to those on low incomes. Whether these objectives could be achieved by moving to a system whereby pension contributions are made out of post-tax income – another proposal under Treasury consideration – was also discussed.
The roundtable was held in partnership with the Association of British Insurers.
