Conservative party conference: “Delivering a career for all: creating opportunities for highly skilled and highly paid employment”

Reform convened a private roundtable at the Conservative Party conference, led by Damian Hinds MP, Minister of State for Employment, on the theme “Delivering a career for all: creating opportunities for highly skilled and highly paid employment”.

Whilst unemployment in the UK has fallen below pre-financial crisis levels, the prevalence of low-pay, low-prospects employment remains a crucial barrier to social mobility and is driving an ever-increasing in-work benefits bill. At the same time, employers are pointing to critical skills gaps in our economy which are having a drag effect on the country’s productivity levels. However, ensuring everyone can benefit from a career that is valued by both employees and wider society requires workers to be appropriately equipped for their local labour market. Delivering a career for everyone will, therefore, require high-quality education and skills provision in addition to in-work support, strong transition points into employment and across labour markets, effective support for employers and strong local economic growth.
