Better procurement, better public services

Reform is delighted to hold a high level seminar on “Better procurement, better public services”, with Anne Bulford, Managing Director of Finance and Operations at the BBC.

Getting more value from the relationship between the Government and its suppliers will be a key objective for the new Government. The Cabinet Office has estimated that the UK public sector spends around £230 billion per year on goods and services, around a third of all public spending. Better procurement can support not only to greater efficiency but also the reform of public services to ensure better outcomes for citizens. The experience of the BBC is highly relevant to this policy challenge. In its report “Driving Efficiency at the BBC”, launched in Westminster at a Reform event in November, the Corporation reported that its efficiency savings had outperformed central government in the decade prior to 2015. Better procurement has been a key part of that success.
