Reform convened a private policy roundtable on the new challenges for local governance, led by Professor Tony Travers, Director of LSE London at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The discussion focused on two issues. It explored challenges in current government financing, such as whether current funding mechanisms reward failure and disincentive success in local public service delivery, and whether local government should expect a steadily decreasing budget in the future. Secondly, it discussed the possibility and desirability of further devolution and decentralisation of public services. Questions were raised of what we want local government to be – an enterprise in itself, or merely an agent of delivery – and of whether responsible local governance might be key to bringing fragmented public services together.
This event was held in partnership with Deloitte.
